1Then Joseph came and reported to Pharaoh, and he said, “My father and my brothers, along with their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come from the land of Canaan, and now they are in the land of Goshen.”
2And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them before Pharaoh.
3Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds of flocks—both we and our fathers.”
4And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, because there is no pasture for the flocks that belong to your servants, for the famine is heavy in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know that there are capable men among them, then set them as overseers of livestock over what is mine.”
7Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many are the days of the years of your life?”
9And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojournings are a hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.”
10Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh.
11So Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a holding in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12And Joseph provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their dependents.
13Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very heavy, and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine.
14And Joseph gathered up all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain that they were buying, and Joseph brought the silver into Pharaoh’s house.
15When the silver had run out from the land of Egypt and from the land of Canaan, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying, “Give us food! Why should we die before you? For the silver is gone.”
16And Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock, if the silver is gone.”
17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, for the flocks of sheep, for the herds of cattle, and for the donkeys; and he supplied them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18When that year had ended, they came to him in the second year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that the silver is spent, and the herds of cattle belong to my lord. Nothing is left before my lord except our bodies and our land.
19Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be servants to Pharaoh. And give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the ground may not become desolate.”
20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians sold each his field, because the famine was severe upon them; and the land became Pharaoh’s.
21As for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the border of Egypt to its other end.
22Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they ate their allotment that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.
23Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you today, along with your land, for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you, and you shall sow the ground.
24And at the harvests you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four of the parts shall be yours, for seed of the field and for your food and for those in your households, and for food for your little ones.”
25And they said, “You have kept us alive! May we find favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.”
26So Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, in force to this day, that a fifth should go to Pharaoh; only the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh’s.
27So Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gained holdings in it and were fruitful and multiplied greatly.
28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years.
29When the days of Israel drew near for him to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal with me in loyal love and faithfulness: please do not bury me in Egypt,
30but let me lie down with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I myself will do as you have said.”
31He said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him, and Israel bowed himself down at the head of the bed.
