1Now the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh.”
2And she continued to bear—his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd of flocks, while Cain was a worker of the ground.
3And it came about, at the end of some days, that Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground as an offering to Yahweh.
4And Abel, he too brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And Yahweh looked with favor on Abel and on his offering,
5but on Cain and on his offering he did not look with favor. And Cain became very angry, and his face fell.
6And Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
7Is it not so that if you do well, there is lifting up? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
8And Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And it came about, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
9And Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10And he said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.
11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12When you work the ground, it will no longer give its strength to you. A wanderer and a fugitive you will be in the earth.”
13And Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14Behold, you have driven me out this day from upon the face of the ground, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth, and it will be that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
15And Yahweh said to him, “Therefore, anyone who kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And Yahweh set a sign for Cain, so that anyone who found him would not strike him down.
16And Cain went out from before Yahweh and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he was building a city, and he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
18And to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
19And Lamech took for himself two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
20And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
21And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and pipe.
22And Zillah, she too bore Tubal-cain, a forger of every cutting tool of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, give ear to my speech: For a man I have killed for wounding me, and a boy for bruising me.
24For sevenfold Cain is avenged, but Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, “For God has appointed for me another offspring in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.”
26And to Seth, to him also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. Then it was begun to call on the name of Yahweh.
