1Now Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2And Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her; and he took her and lay with her and violated her.
3And his self clung to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke to the heart of the young woman.
4And Shechem said to Hamor his father, “Get me this girl for a wife.”
5Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came.
6And Hamor, Shechem’s father, went out to Jacob to speak with him.
7And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard, and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, for he had done a disgraceful thing against Israel by lying with the daughter of Jacob—a thing that should not be done.
8And Hamor spoke with them, saying, “Shechem my son—his soul longs for your daughter; please give her to him as a wife.
9And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10And you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade in it and take holdings in it.”
11And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.
12Impose on me ever so much bride-price and gift, and I will give as you say to me; only give me the young woman as a wife.”
13And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke—because he had defiled Dinah their sister—
14and they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has a foreskin, for that is a disgrace to us.
15Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you become like us, that every male among you be circumcised.
16Then we will give our daughters to you and take your daughters for ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people.
17But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”
18And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem son of Hamor.
19And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he delighted in Jacob’s daughter; and he was the most honored of all his father’s house.
20So Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
21“These men are peaceable with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for the land—look—is broad enough on both sides for them. Their daughters we will take for ourselves as wives, and our daughters we will give to them.
22Only on this condition will the men consent to us, to dwell with us and become one people: that every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
23Their livestock, their possessions, and all their beasts—will they not be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
24And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
25And it happened on the third day, while they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came against the city unopposed, and they killed every male.
26And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and went out.
27The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28Their flocks and their herds and their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field, they took.
29And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives they captured and plundered, along with all that was in the house.
30And Jacob said to Simeon and to Levi, “You have brought trouble on me, making me a stench among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanite and the Perizzite. I am few in number, and they will gather against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”
31But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”
