2 Chronicles 17

The AIT Bible

Jehoshaphat Becomes King

1And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel.

2And he stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and he placed garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured.

3And Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of David his father and did not seek the Baals.

4For he sought the God of his father, and he walked in his commandments, and not according to the deeds of Israel.

5And Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gave tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance.

6And his heart was lifted up in the ways of Yahweh, and he further removed the high places and the Asherahs from Judah.

Teaching the Law in Judah

7And in the third year of his reign he sent his officials—Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah—to teach in the cities of Judah,

8and with them the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.

9And they taught in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and they went around through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

Jehoshaphat's Military Strength

10And the dread of Yahweh was upon all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah, and they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

11And some of the Philistines were bringing Jehoshaphat tribute and silver as a levy; the Arabs too were bringing him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats.

12And Jehoshaphat kept growing greater to the utmost, and he built in Judah fortresses and store-cities.

13And he had much work in the cities of Judah, and men of war, mighty warriors, in Jerusalem.

14And these were their musters by their fathers’ houses: for Judah, commanders of thousands—Adnah the commander, and with him three hundred thousand mighty warriors;

15and next to him Jehohanan the commander, and with him two hundred eighty thousand;

16and next to him Amasiah son of Zichri, who volunteered himself to Yahweh, and with him two hundred thousand mighty warriors.

17And from Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty warrior, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield;

18and next to him Jehozabad, and with him a hundred eighty thousand equipped for war.

19These were the ones serving the king, apart from those the king had stationed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.
