1And Ezra rose up from the court of the temple and went into the chamber of Jonah son of Naseibus.
2And having lodged there, he did not taste bread nor drink water, mourning over the great iniquities of the multitude.
3And a proclamation was made throughout all Judea and Jerusalem to all those from the captivity, that they should be gathered in Jerusalem.
4And whoever did not appear within two or three days, according to the judgment of the presiding elders, their cattle would be confiscated, and they themselves would be separated from the multitude of the captivity.
5And those from the tribe of Judah and Benjamin were gathered together in Jerusalem within three days. This was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month.
6And the whole multitude sat together in the open square of the temple, trembling because of the present winter weather.
7And Ezra rose up and said to them, ‘You have acted lawlessly and have lived with foreign women, so as to add to the sin of Israel.’
8And now, give confession and glory to the Lord God of our fathers,
9and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women.
10And the whole multitude cried out and said with a loud voice, ‘We will do just as you have said.’
11But the multitude is large and the season is wintery, and we are not able to stand in the open—and we have not found. And this is not the work of one or two days for us, for we have sinned greatly in these matters.
12But let the leaders of the multitude stand forth, and let all those from our settlements who have foreign wives come at an appointed time,
13with the elders and judges of each place, until the wrath of the Lord is turned away from us concerning this matter.
14Jonathan son of Azael and Ezeias son of Thocanus took charge of these things, and Mosollamus, Levis, and Sabbataeus assisted them.
15And those from the captivity did according to all these things.
16And Ezra the priest chose for himself men who were heads of their ancestral houses, all of them by name. And they convened on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
17And the matters concerning the men who had taken foreign wives were brought to a conclusion by the first day of the first month.
18And among the priests, there were found those who had taken foreign wives:
19from the sons of Jesus son of Josedek, and his brothers: Mahelas, Eleazar, Joribus, and Jodanus.
20And they pledged to put away their wives, and to offer rams for their atonement for their error.
21And from the sons of Emmer: Ananias, Zabdaios, Manes, Thamaios, Jereel, and Azarias.
22And from the sons of Phaisour: Elionais, Asseias, Ismaelos, Nathanaeos, Okailedos, and Salthas.
23And from the Levites: Jozabdos, Senseis, and Konos (that is, Kaleitais), and Pathaios, Oudas, and Joanas.
24From the temple singers: Eliasebos and Bakchouros.
25From the gatekeepers: Salloumos and Tolbanes.
26From Israel, of the sons of Phoros: Jerma, Jezeias, Melcheias, Milelos, Eleazaros, Asebeias, and Bannaias.
27From the sons of Ela: Matan, Zacharias, Jezoriklos, Oabdeios, Jeremoth, and Aedeias.
28And from the sons of Zamoth: Eliadas, Eleiaseimos, Othonias, Jareimoth, Sabathos, and Zeralias.
29And from the sons of Bebai: Joannes, Ananias, Zabdos, and Emaththis.
30And from the sons of Mani: Olamos, Mamouchos, Jedaios, Jasoubos, Asaelos, and Jeremoth.
31And from the sons of Addein: Lathos and Moosseiss, Lakkounos and Naidos, and Beskaspasmus and Sesthel and Balnous and Manasseas.
32and from the sons of Annan: Eliodas and Asaias and Melcheias and Sabbaias and Simon Chosamos.
33and from the sons of Asom: Maltannaios and Mattathias and Sabannaious and Eleiphalat and Manasseh and Semeei.
34and from the sons of Baanei: Ieremias, Momdeios, Maeros, Iouna, Mamdai and Pedias and Anos, Karabaseion and Enaseibos and Mamtanamos, Eliaseis, Bannous, Edialeis, Someeis, Selemias, Nathanias; and from the sons of Ezora: Seseis, Ezreil, Azaelos, Samatos, Zambrei, Phosepos.
35From the sons of Ooma: Zeitias, Zabadaias, Edos, Ouel, Banaias.
36All these had married foreign women, and they sent them away with their children.
37So the priests and the Levites and the people of Israel settled in Jerusalem and in the country. On the new moon of the seventh month, the sons of Israel were in their own settlements.
38And the whole assembly gathered with one accord in the open square before the eastern gate of the temple.
39And they told Ezra the priest and reader to bring the Law of Moses, which had been delivered by the God of Israel.
40So Ezra the high priest brought the Law to the whole assembly of men and women, and to all the priests, so they could hear the Law, on the new moon of the seventh month.
41And he read in the open square before the temple gate from dawn until midday, in the presence of the men and women; and all the people gave their attention to the Law.
42And Ezra the priest and reader of the Law stood on the wooden platform that had been constructed.
43And there stood by him on his right: Mattathias, Sammou, Ananias, Azarias, Oureias, Ezekias, and Baalsamos.
44and on his left: Phalaios, Misael, Melcheias, Lothasoubos, Nabareias, and Zacharias.
45And Ezra took up the book in the sight of all the people, for he was seated in a prominent place before all of them.
46And as he unrolled the Law, they all stood upright. Then Azarias blessed the Most High God, the Almighty.
47And all the assembly answered, ‘Amen, Amen’; and lifting up their hands, they fell to the ground and worshiped God.
48Iesous and Anniouth and Sarabias, Iadeinos, Iarsouboos, Abtaios, Autaias, Maiannas and Kaleitas, Azarias, Katethzabdos, Annias, Phalias, the Levites, were teaching the Law of the Lord; and they read the Law of the Lord to the assembly, at the same time making the reading clear.
49Then Attarates said to Ezra the high priest and reader, and to the Levites who were teaching the assembly, and to all the people:
50‘This day is holy to the Lord.’ (For they were all weeping as they heard the Law.)
51‘Go, therefore, eat the rich food and send portions to those who have nothing.’
52‘For the day is holy to the Lord, and do not be grieved, for the Lord will glorify you.’
53And the Levites commanded all the people, saying, ‘This day is holy; do not be grieved.’
54And they all went away to eat and to drink and to rejoice, and to give portions to those who had nothing, and to celebrate with great joy.
55because they had understood the words in which they had been instructed. And they assembled together.
